Congressman Donald Payne Jr. Endorses Lester Taylor for Mayor of East Orange

(EAST ORANGE) – Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr. (NJ-10) today announced his endorsement of Lester Taylor for mayor of East Orange in the June 4th Democratic primary. Rep. Payne, Jr. is enthusiastically supporting the Line A team of Lester Taylor, Chris James (1st Ward), Romal Bullock (2nd Ward), Ted Green (3rd Ward), Tyshammie Cooper (4th Ward) and Alicia Holman (5th Ward).

“Lester Taylor has the experience and motivation we need to create change in East Orange and make this city a great place to live for our families,” said Rep. Payne, Jr. “I am excited about having a partner in Lester Taylor who will work tirelessly for the people of East Orange at the municipal level the same way we are fighting for our families in Washington. Lester shares the same values and has a fresh set of ideas for reducing crime, lowering property taxes, creating good jobs, revitalizing downtown areas, making services more accessible for seniors and making sure East Orange children have a great education and a bright future ahead of them. I have no doubt that Lester Taylor will provide the kind of principled, open and inclusive leadership that East Orange families need and deserve.”

“I am honored and humbled to have Congressman Donald Payne Jr.’s support for our plans to make our community safer and more affordable, to put our residents back to work, fix our schools, provide safe recreational areas for our children and to make East Orange a great place to live, work and play,” said Lester Taylor. “Congressman Payne, Jr. has set an extraordinary example advocating on behalf of our families and I am committed to working just as hard to put our residents first and improve our quality of life. This is a critical moment in our city and I am excited to knock on doors and talk to residents every single day about how we are going to bring change to East Orange and reach our city’s great potential.”

“Lester leads a great team, including Chris James for First Ward Council, who like myself has grown up in public service, but always remembers what a privilege it is to serve our community and will fight to make sure the job gets done for our families,” continued Payne, Jr. “The Line A team has what it takes to solve problems and find common sense solutions for East Orange families.”

The Honorable Donald M. Payne, Jr. has worked as a tireless advocate for New Jersey’s working families for over two decades, fighting to create jobs, increase health and economic security, and invest in education. Congressman Payne, Jr., was first elected to Congress in November 2012 in both a special election and general election following the untimely death of his father, respected former Congressman Donald M. Payne, Sr., who represented New Jersey’s 10th District for twenty-three years.

Lester Taylor, 39, has built a statewide reputation as an attorney who has helped rehabilitate communities, cities and schools. He and his wife Bibi, a lifelong resident of East Orange, are raising three young children, 2, 4 and 14. As a father and a taxpayer, Lester Taylor has the experience and commitment to make East Orange a great place to work and raise a family.
